I record di overclock sono in genere appannaggio degli utenti più appassionati, disposti a peripezie con i sistemi di raffreddamento più spinti per pochi minuti, se non secondi, di gloria a frequenze di clock considerate impensabili. Quella della ricerca della massima frequenza di clock alla quale avviare un sistema è da sempre una sfida tecnologica fine a se stessa, dimostrazione di quello che è possibile fare benché solo per lo spazio di uno screenshot o poco più.
Fa un certo effetto quindi vedere come sia AMD quest’oggi ad annunciare il superamento di un record molto ambito, quello della più elevata frequenza di clock ottenuta con un processore. Non è un caso che a questo si sia arrivati con un sample di pre produzione di processore della serie FX, prossima generazione di CPU AMD attesa al debutto nel corso del quarto trimestre 2011.
La nuova frequenza record è di ben 8.429 MHz, come testimoniato dallo screenshot dell’utility CPU-Z. Il processore, un modello AMD FX-8150, è stato modificato abilitando uno solo dei moduli Bulldozer integrati sui 4 disponibili: questo giustifica l’indicazione di due soli core. Il moltiplicatore di frequenza, sbloccato verso l’alto in queste CPU, è stato portato a 31x mentre la frequenza di bus è aumentata sino a circa 272 MHz contro i 200 MHz di default.
Per ottenere questo risultato AMD ha utilizzato l’abbinamento standard: tensioni di alimentazione ben superiori a quelle di default e utilizzo di sistemi di raffreddamento estremamente spinti. Accanto al tradizionale azoto liquido è stato utilizzato anche elio liquido, capace di una temperatura minima ancor più ridotta e già utilizzato da AMD per altri simili test di overclock con i processori Phenom II. L’utilizzo di tali tecniche implica necessariamente l’assenza del cosiddetto Cold Bug nel processore, che impedisce alla CPU di operare correttamente nel momento in cui viene portata a frequenze fortemente sotto lo zero.

The AMD FX CPU, set to launch in the fourth quarter of 2011, achieved a top speed of 8.429 GHz, surpassing the previous record of 8.308 GHz. The record was set on Aug. 31, 2011, in Austin, Texas, by “Team AMD FX,” a group comprised of elite overclocking specialists working alongside top AMD technologists, who will also be named in the Guinness World Records.
